Founded in 1183

The Premonstratensian monastery was founded in the year 1183 by local lords Konrad and Beringer in what was then Shuozenriet, just 63 years after the establishment of the holy order. It developed into an important institution and was extended and converted several times.

Over the years the abbey was granted many privileges, such as that of high jurisdiction (power over life and death) in the year 1521. For this reason, the abbots introduced the sword into the crest in addition to the crosier. The clerical chapter oversaw the fortunes of the monastic community until the secularisation of 1803.

Over 800 years of monastic history are on display in the monastery museum with its sculptures, Baroque paintings, epitaphs, pontificals, liturgical objects, books and reliquaries.
